Lionel Messi has decided to leave FC Barcelona this summer.
TyC Sports and Onda Cero in Argentina confirmed the story on Tuesday night,
the 33-year-old wants to leave the club that has brought him through the academy system and where he has become the best player in the world.
Barcelona have since confirmed the news to various outlets.
Marca then reported that the Argentine has sent a certified fax to Barcelona to inform them that he has triggered a clause in his contract that allows Messi to leave at the end of each season.
The Spanish paper reported that usually this clause will have to be activated by Jun. 1 but Messi’s lawyers argue that the unusual circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic mean that he could trigger the clause now that the Champions League season is concluded.
According to various reports Messi spoke with Ronald Koeman last Friday and told the Dutch head coach that he wants to leave the club. There have already been significant speculations about his next destination.
Onda Cero in Argentina reported that Messi could be headed to Inter Milan, China, Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City.
TyC Sports, in the meantime, also added Major League Soccer and his former club Newell’s Old Boys as possible destinations for the 33-year-old Argentine.
